Customer Reviews

The straps did not hold up at all. The ...The straps did not hold up at all. The Velcro pealed off of the strap and had to be glued down. Then, the other strap broke. Very disappointing.1I was willing to pay the price thinking Merrell was a good brand and they were going to lastDon't buy these shoes! We bought these less than one month ago; my son has worn them maybe 15 times... and today one of the velcro straps completely ripped off of the shoe. These shoes were quite expensive; I was willing to pay the price thinking Merrell was a good brand and they were going to last. Needless to say we are quite disappointed... such a waste of money and won't be buying or recommending Merrell shoes again!1Cheap VelcroReally liked this shoe at first. My daughter loved them, they looked good, and seemed to hold up well. After 4 months of wearing them to school the velcro wore out on the strap of both shoes. Completely fell apart and came off of the straps. Was hoping for more durability from a Merrell product. Currently trying to get Merrell to replace under warranty. Will update if they stand by their product.1Great shoes for wide feetFirst let me say that my daughter has wide feet and is super picky about the shoes she will wear (very frustrating!!!) She had a pair of these that we bought her last spring. They were her favorite shoes through 8 weeks of summer nature camps and a few backpacking trips, through rain, mud, and everything else that she got into. They went into the washer a few times and on the shoe dryer almost every night. Then she wore them to school all year, and now, this March, the toe of the sole finally started separating from the shoe. They really weren't wearable anymore as the sole was flapping. I could probably have repaired them, but she needed a larger size anyway. So we got the next size up, and she loves them just as much! We're looking forward to some backpacking this summer also, and many more nature camps. These shoes are great! Our go-to shoe.5These are durable and comfortable shoes. Merrell makes a great shoe and these ...Edit 11/24 they are falling apart at the top of the shoe where her foot slides in. The fabric around her ankles is wearing through and this part of the shoe looks like she s been wearing them daily for 10 months not 1 or 2. The sole and rest of the shoe are holding up ok. They are still her favorite but I m not sure how much longer they will last.My daughter is picky and hard on shoes. I have been buying her Walmart sneakers and replacing them every month !!! She absolutely loves these. These are durable and comfortable shoes. Merrell makes a great shoe and these did not disappoint.4Velcro did not last more than 1 week...I bought these for my 7 yr old son thinking it is a good brand shoe. While the order came on time and the shoe fit him as expected. The velcro was cheap. It did not last more than 1 week and it makes the shoe unwearable. I should have stuck with Stride Rite brand like I usually do cuz their shoes last a LONG time. I will not be buying Merrell anymore!1Falls Apart - Merrell Only Offer a 60-day Warranty - Poor Velcro and Design Makes Shoes UnusableWe bought two pairs of these shoes, one for my 5-year-old and one for my 7-year-old. Both are now falling apart. The Velcro on these shoes is trash, and cannot standup to standard use by kids. It tears free from the shoes (see pictures). It's a shame, because my kids love these shoes and they're comfortable and otherwise seem to be well-designed. But the Velcro issue is HUGE and makes the shoes unusable once it rips free (the shoes won't stay on while running).Despite having the reputation of a quality brand, Merrell only offers a 60-day warranty on shoes. I all but guarantee you that these shoes will fail soon after that 60-day period is up, especially if you have active kids like me. 60-day is nothing for shoes at this price point. I'm unhappy and will be looking at other brands in the future.2Velcro is a Weak LinkThis is a beautiful, sturdy shoe, and I chose it because I trust the Merrell brand. I know boys are hard on shoes, especially when they only wear one pair day in and day out. This one has held up well in the structure and soles EXCEPT for the velcro. The velcro came off from the nice leather strap it was attached to, and now the shoe cannot be closed. It's annoying, because it is truly a "weak link" in the shoe that makes the whole shoe not work. I am going to try to fix it somehow but the leather is too tough to run through my sewing machine. Might have to get a heavy duty needle and a rock...But for the price and this happening within three months, eh, not so great. Disappointed in that because the rest of the shoe is very good.3My son's favorite shoes; he's on his third pair as he's outgrown the old onesI'm reviewing these mostly because my son has owned three separate pairs over the past four or five years. These are my kid's absolute favorite shoes. While his recently replaced 1-year-old Merrell Trail Chasers definitely show wear, they have not failed in the way so many reviewers have experienced.I'm uploading photos of our 2nd pair, replaced one year and 12 days after purchase and worn almost every day during the school year (excluding rain boot days and sandal weather days.)Merrell quality control must be spotty, or my son is surprisingly easy on shoes compared to other kids. We send him to a school that prioritizes play outside every day (in New England), so his shoes definitely get a healthy share of wet weather, mud, and running around on grass, gravel, and brick pavers plus concrete and asphalt around our home.I can say that my kids have both sometimes worn out the velcro fastening strap on *other* pairs of shoes from other brands. I don't think we are being particularly careful or delicate with the Trail Chaser shoes. :) Ours have held up as I would expect from sturdy hiking sneakers.I bought the first pair of Merrell Trail Chaser shoes in person at a Nordstrom store after having my son's feet measured. As he outgrew them (yet refused to wear any others), I found them on Amazon and purchased his second pair in January 2019. In January 2020, I bought his third, and current, pair. The Amazon listing has changed a little bit from:Merrell Trail Chaser Hiking Shoe (Little Kid/Big Kid), Gunsmoke/Orange, 2.5 M US Little Kidto:Merrell Kids' Unisex M-Trail Chaser Sneaker, Gunsmoke/Orange, 4.5 M US Big KidAside from what is probably just a product listing change, we've had the same color combo of army green (Gunsmoke) and Orange for all three pairs, and neither my son nor I can find any visible difference between the old and new pairs. From the photos of less satisfied consumers, it does appear that more of them show alternate color combos. Perhaps the Gunsmoke/Orange combo is a better bet for anyone reading this with quality concerns? My child's passionate love of these shoes is the best review I can provide. It's not easy for me to get him to wear any other casual shoe. He likes the speed of velcro over old-fashioned tie laces. He likes that they are weather resistant so he can wear them on rainy days.My son says his feet stay dry (unless he steps in a puddle so deep that they fill up with water from the top.)For other parents whose kids love these Merrell Trail Chaser shoes, I can recommend this particular style for boots that might fit the same child:Merrell Chameleon 7 Access Mid Waterproof Boot Big Kid 5 BlackI bought the boots a half size larger to allow for thick winter socks. My son has been happy with the boots, too, but we've only had them a few weeks now. From my perspective, if you like the looks of these shoes, it is worth trying them, but make sure you buy from a seller with a generous return period in case you get a pair like those displayed in the other reviews. I will keep buying these until my son has outgrown the largest size (or finally decides he likes something else!)5My 6-year-old boy destroyed these shoes within 1 1/2 monthsI have an active 6-year-old boy, much like most. He loves to play outside, in the dirt, run, jump, pretty much anything that involves fun. He wore through his New Balance shoes in 6 months, so I thought I'd try Merrell hiking shoe. Big mistake. These shoes are completely ruined. From toe to tongue, absolutely unusable. The soles are fine, but, sadly, we really need to upper part of the shoe for it to be functional. This is definitely NOT an everyday shoe for an active boy. Do not buy them thinking they will be. They won't last.I also bought a pair for my fairly active (but not nearly as much) 5-year-old, and they did last longer. But now those too are falling apart. After only 2 1/2 months.I recommend Geox. We bought a pair and they are amazing. Really well built, sturdy, long lasting for sure.1
