Customer Reviews

Installation was super easy on my bikeA few weeks ago I bought an old school Gary Fisher steel mountain bike. The intent was to turn it in to a cheap and effective commuter. One of the first orders of business was to find a rear rack. After looking at a lot of different products including the Topeak Explorer, I wound up going with the Ibera PakRak Bicycle Touring Carrier Plus+, Frame-Mounted for Heavier Top & Side Loads, Height Adjustable, Fender Board, for 26"-29" Frames.Installation was super easy on my bike. I ve also used it with a pair of Ortlieb Back Roller Classic Panniers. The rack and panniers work very well together. The instructions are a bit sparse but really, the steps needed for installation are pretty obvious. The hardware that was included with this rack seemed to be good quality. Some of the significant factors that caused me to pick this rack are as follows. It is height adjustable which allowed me to get it as close as possible to the rear wheel (whit out hitting). It has bars that extend back and down. This was important to me as I don t want any type of pannier or bag I carry to swing into the back wheel. These bars prevent that from happening. It has a load capacity of 55 lbs (as noted in the Amazon ad). From what my research indicated, this is a substantial load capacity for any rack in this price range. Last thing I would add is it is priced very reasonably, given the quality. All in all, this rack is a good buy in the price range. The only thing I can see steering someone towards another product is if you want a built in, proprietary method of attaching panniers/bins/etc. The Topeak rack seems to be tops in that category, granted it doesn t have the bar that extends backwards (which was of more importance to me). 5Great solution for other panniers, with modificationsI just bought a second Ibera PakRak Touring Carrier Plus because I have been using the first one for over a year on my primary/daily ride, and I needed a second rack for the backup bike I'm preparing mainly for travel on trips where I don't want to worry about my primary bike to end up at risk of being ost or stolen. This won't be the best choice for everybody, but It is definitely one of the stronger, lighter, yet cheaper solutions to pack for anything from daily commutes to international tours. The main problem with this rack will be for those who want to pack other brands of panniers, not all of which will fit without added modifications. My solution for using my preferred Axiom panniers & Rackbook Pro case (with Rixen and Kaul Flip Lock attachments) has been to add a couple small 'P' clamps, screwed down with the same bolts that connect the bottom extension posts, to which I then add 1-inch key rings. The key rings give me sites on each side of the rack to attach the lower pannier hooks in order to keep everything tight and riding securely. I'm sure these racks are great as is for Ibera panniers, but it would have been nice for Ibera to include attachment sites for those using other pannier solutions, especially for those like me who don't want to spend more than necessary on panniers, but who aren't especially enamored with the Ibera quick-release system (I prefer to make my panniers a little harder for people to remove (steal), since I most often ride carrying an expensive notebook with me.Especially appreciated are the facts that (1) this rack mounts back far enough to keep my panniers well out of the way of the heels of my big feet -- even when I'm wearing boots and using toe clips, (2) the rack protects my wheels from being hit by the panniers, and (3) the rack has a fairly large, stable area with plenty of potential attachment points for carrying top loads. So it's great for carrying all my camping gear, including tent, fly, pad, pillow and sleeping bag on the top, while I use relatively small panniers to carry everything else on trips. 5Unable to Mount ProperlyIf it weren't for the trouble of mailing this back, I would do it. When I bought it the page stated that it is "Adjustable to fit most 26" 29" bicycle frames..." Well my wife has a 26" frame and the 9 inch mounting arms that the rack comes with are not long enough to install it properly. I called Ibera and told them of the problem and they said to go on Amazon and buy a seat post mount. I informed them that if the mounting arms were 12 inches it would work. The representative said that Ibera only makes the 9 inch arms. Instead of the seat post mount, I went on Amazon and bought the "Topeak Extra Long Mounting Arms" for $10.75 but now I have to wait until they get here to mount the rack. Apparently from all the 5 star reviews on the Topeak Mounting Arms that I ordered, many people had the same problem with short mounting arms and are now, with the longer mounting arms, able to mount the rack properly. 1Very nice rack. I mounted this on a 29'' bike ...Very nice rack. I mounted this on a 29'' bike with no problem. Had 2 inches of clearance from the top of the tire to the bottom side of the rack. Would like to note that instead of mounting the brackets to the frame under the seat with the provided bolts, I used zip ties. It is very secure and you have more options as to where you can attach those brackets included. Also, if you need to remove it or adjust you just cut the zip ties and remount, simple. (Will upload pictures)**Only problem I have with this rack is that if your bike falls over you risk a good chance of one of the mounting bolts snapping or the entire rack bending. I guess with the light weight of the rack limits is durability. 4They are sturdy. Refer to photos for more detailsI purchased 3 of these. They're about the right size for my 16 inch frame bikes. The bike wheels are all 26 inch. They are sturdy. Refer to photos for more details. 4Fits my hybrid Trek bike with 27" wheelsThis is the only high-quality rear bike rack that I was able to find that fits larger wheeled bikes. It fits my 27" tires on my hybrid Trek bike. Utilizing the "Sunlite Bicycle Monostay Adapter" which I also purchased through Amazon, I was able to actually use a rear rack as I do not have the pre-drilled holes to attach the two "prongs" to. I included pictures that show how the rack looks on my hybrid bike. I definitely recommend this rack. Good quality. The install took me awhile, but it wasn't difficult, just required me to use my brain a little. 5This will work fine, but not great and not for those who like a clean installationThe rack is solidly built. That's not the issue. The installation is not tidy and certainly not clean. The arms that attach to the bike at the lower rack stay have very soft threads. In my case, the rack spread the attachment slightly, but enough that the threads would not engage the bolt threads cleanly. I finally re-tapped the threads and added threadlocker to get a tight fit. Next problem: Not enough bracket materials to attach cleanly to the upper rack stays. I had to buy some flat brackets to get this to have some semblance of a clean installation. I have previously purchased Topeak racks and Thule racks, which ship with multiple bracket options for a professional looking installation. This will function fine, but I would not buy this rack again. A rack installation should be a 15 minute job, not a multi-step process while obtaining more brackets to get a tidy, finished installation. 3Outstanding!!!I first bought the Wald 520. A nightmare; no instructions, missing bolts and my heels hit basket when riding. The installation of the Wald was difficult, mounts didn't line up. I took off work to return it at the post office and they wanted $45 dollars. I contacted the seller of the Wald(not this seller) and they responded they would send me a ups label for 9$ but needed me to get a money order. I dumped the wald in the trash. Not that I have the money to throw away but riding is about simplifing things and reducing stress. I was done with the drama and amazon sellers that send you junk knowing most will not bother to return. This seller and the Iberia PakRac was a completely different positive experience. This rack is solid and well designed for a universal fit. It included instruction and high quality bolts. Everything you need is provided except a 6mm allen wrench. I had it installed perfectly in ten minutes on my Raliegh Redux. It doesn't come with a bungee cord so now I'll need one of those. Also I have hydralic disc brakes and mounted fine to the dropout mounts without the need to buy the more expensive disc brake version of this product. All connection points are adjustable for a custom fit. The top arms just made it in the 3rd slot for a level fit. It is designed well. It even includes quick release bolts, not that i'll be taking it on and off.I also bought the recommended BV led headlight and tail light. This didnt include batteries, six AAA that cost an additional 11 bucks. The tail light is way to small and didn't fit the light mount on the rack. I do NOT recommend getting the amazon recommed 5 led light combo.Although, I am able to utilize the the lights. They just don't fit the rack. I just assumed since amazon recommended to buy them together they would fit perfectly.I dont normaly leave reviews. Hopefully this informations helps someone. 5If you get this rack, don't miss out on the awesome trunk bag that snaps EASILY onto this rack...UPDATE: From some of the reviews and comments, some people may not realize that this rack allows the Ibera PakRak Bicycle Quick-Release Commuter Trunk Bag to snap EASILY on and off this rack. I use this rack with the PakRak Trunk Bag for commuting to work, and when I get to work all I have to do is press a latch and the whole trunk bag slips right off with all my clothes and gear inside. It also snaps on to the rack quickly and very securely. Awesome SYSTEM... Not just a great rack.Rack is well made and every bolt and threaded hole was in the right place and tightened smoothly. I recommend using BLUE, medium-strength locktite on threads so that it doesn't vibrate loose. Very solid! Good welds. Quality stainless-steel hardware included. However, what earned it four stars instead of five, is there are 4 orange-colored PLASTIC clips, two in front, two at the back, that seem to serve no purpose, yet each one has indexed with a small hole drilled into the TOP of the bar. One of my clips was already broken as new and they are very brittle and fragile. It won't be long before all four are broken and fallen off, leaving four holes to let rain into the tubing, and there is no low-point drain hole on that tube. I don't even see how those clips are needed for the quick-connect bag that is designed for this rack...It is aluminum, so won't rust, but still, not sure why they are even there. But don't let this MINOR issue keep you from getting this excellent rack. 5One size may not fit allBut then again you get what you pay for, if not satisfied just send it back. My rack did not fit a 29" frame. I was disappointed with the solution to "bend" the brackets to attach to the frame. I feel things like that are klugey solutions and there were no suggestions within the installation instructions. This saves the manufacturer from any liability in case the klugey solution doesn't work. If your klugey solution doesn't work, then it is not likely you can choose the return route, as you have destroyed the product.Suggestions: I chose the klugey route, although for a little more you can buy a better rack. First DO NOT attempt to bend the rod by hand to guess your way into a fit.- First step is to attach the rack using the adjustable rods to the holes above the wheel hub. The bolts have thumb grips suggesting that you finger tighten these bolts.- Test the rack for correct height and clearance.- Once you are satisfied with the rack clearance, attach the the horizontal stabilizer rods to the bicycle frame. Again, finger tighten or just enough so that the bolts don't work themselves out while you are working on the next step.- Lifting the rods and positioning them just under the plate that they will be eventually attached. Slowly roll the rack forward (which is now attached by the wheel hub bolts). As the rack becomes parallel to the ground, you will see the rods begin to bend. Slightly at first and more bend follows as you move the rack forward.- Once you believe you have the rack positioned the way that you want it, you should see the holes in the rack line with some holes in the bracket. You might have to work this slightly to see that all 4 holes on the front of the rack line up cleanly.- Starting with the two rear holes on each side of the rack, insert the bolts and tighten the nuts firmly. This will cause more bending of the rods and should allow you to insert the bolts just in front of these and start threading the nuts. You may have some more adjustment required to line up these front holes, so don't tighten the rear nuts fully.- Once all nuts are threaded, tightened everything (see pictures). This seemed to work for me, but bear in mind, if this doesn't appear to work for you, returning is not likely to be an option. 2
